My name is Zoom

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

On September 29, 2009 - our little Hannah Jane turned one. Where on earth did the time go? My dad keeps telling me that the older I get the faster time goes. That is surely turning out to be the case. Hannah had an extended birthday celebration - as all good birthdays should be. It started out the weekend before her birthday, when Mommy took Haden and Hannah to the Urban Tea Loft in downtown Chandler to enjoy some good girl time. Mommy and Haden enjoyed some decadent desserts and tea, while Hannah had some yummy Cheerios and yogurt. (how is that fair????) There was good conversation, some laughs and a bit of food throwing. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Several days later, on her actual birthday, she survived her first year check up with her pediatrician, despite the 3 shots she received and the brief hysterics that followed. Her stats? 90th percentile in height, 65% in weight and 85% in head circumference (her daddy has said for a long time that she has a fat head!)

After the drama at the doctor, she headed to Donna's house ready to party with her friends - and party she did. She found all of the dog's toys and tossed them - barged into the older kids toys - examined the ones she wanted and then pitched them as well. She might look like her daddy, but she's got her mama's bull in a china shop spirit!

Many of Hannah's friends had some fancy one year old birthday parties (Stavros, Samantha & Addy to name a few) - Hannah's parents - opted for a small family party in order to preserve their sanity given they were moving residences 3 weeks before bringing a new munchkin into their home! Aunt Maria was celebrating her birthday as well (and since she now finds herself on the wrong side of 25 - we'll stop announcing her age) - so mommy made Grandma Linda's Strawberry cake - 3 layers for Maria and cupcakes for Hannah. There was bbq chicken (which was a bit charred on the outside), corn, peas, carrot, rolls and sweet tea. Not a feast - but reminescent of good home cooking from NC.

We had traditional birthday song and the Zoom song* (thank you Grandma Linda!!) - and thanks to Wade - Maria had her 2nd face plant while taking a bite of her birthday cake. It was good times - of course it was replete with almost burning down the ficus tree with the chicken fat fed flames of the grill, one chicken breast being lost to the ground while wrestling it from the charring flames, Princess milling for scraps under the table, sibling rivalry and a bit of tantrum throwing during a spotlight grabbing session - all the while mommy getting super tense and daddy trying to calm it all down. The magic and wonder of a family that could make good sit-com television. Ozzie and Harriet are definitely not running the show here at Chez Nous!

All the while, Hannah was DEVOURING her cupcake. Uncle Jeremy wondered where this not quite 22lb kid could store all the food she'd just packed away. It is pretty amazing to watch. Almost like the Discovery Channel.

*If you are unfortunate enough not to know what the Zoom song is, please click on the link below. It is a time honored tradition in my family started by my Grandma Sally (dating back to when the song could be played on a disposable record) to have this song played after the traditional birthdays song is sung. Linda added the tradition of taking a big bite out of the cake after the candles are blown out while having your picture taken attacking the deliciousness that was either chocolate or strawberry. My youngest brother Mike added the newest tradition of attempting to face plant the cake eater so that they will also be the cake wearer (although he did have to learn the hard way that face planting should wait until AFTER the candles are blown out).
